RU Ok? This question was brought to the attention of our St Michael’s school community during the week leading to Thursday 10 September. And who brought this to our attention? None other than our Year 6 Student Leaders.

Year 6 Student Leaders collaborated, planned and delivered meaningful points of awareness for all students and staff. Their programme of events began prior to RU Ok? Day. Firstly, student leaders wrote and shared prayers with the school community each morning. Secondly, every child in the school participated in creating a handprint banner to be hung at the school entrance on RU Ok? Day.

On RU Ok? Day, Student Leaders invited staff and students to wear a touch of yellow. As well, they placed yellow fabric on a bench on each playground. The purpose of the yellow benches was to encourage those without a friend to use the bench to meet friends. RU Ok? Day is about encouraging people to ask if they are OK and to make a connection with someone new. “No matter how big or small, everything can make a difference, and be meaningful”, said Lane. Zara added, “You can’t just look at someone’s face, you need to talk to them.” [Year 6 Student Leaders]

At the end of this day, the student leaders hoped that everyone would go home feeling like they belong and have someone to talk to. We want to get the message across that everyone has the right to feel OK.
